    I nearly bought a Billingham at the NEC this year as it had a slight discount, although I am glad I didn't as I no longer own any gear. I did buy a Manfrotto messenger bag a few years back that I love and I still use for everyday stuff to carry my laptop and lunch for work. No regrets buying that camera acessory

    This is great. The hardest part of photography for me is the emotional, social side of it, dealing with people, their expectations, their feelings, not being too obvious to get good candid moments. Would be easier to just be invisible in some situations

    I couldn't agree more about the complexity of today's cameras. I often carry a Lumix with me when out and about and a Fuji X-T5 for more serious photography. Trying to remember how each function works on each camera drives me nuts. I'm not talking about all the 'advanced' functions, just adjusting aperture, shutter speed and ISO. There ought to a "simplify" button that enables you to turn off all the extras so you can just take the picture.

    When I bought an old Olympus E M5 mk1, I was terrified when I checked how many things I had to decide what I should use. Should that be on or off? What about that? What does it even mean? If I choose wrong now, will it make bad photos for me? I counted that I had to make about 250 decisions before it was set! Was that really neccesary? Yes, simplifying my photography sounds very wise. Missing the 70’s with my film cameras. Not that much to choose from.

    What? You can do street photography without a Leica????

  • @kcphotogeek6207
    @kcphotogeek6207 День назад

    Would agree with most of it except the first 2. While people shouldn't let gear be a barrier to trying street photography there are some cameras that are far more suited to street than other. Phones mostly don't have screen articulation unless you count the relatively new offerings from Motorola and Samsung for example, but they largely don't have good ergonomics for street either. Larger more traditional DSLRs like a Nikon D850 for example, will take great pics but they are heavy and loud, you will bruise the scene. You probably will attract security guards too depending on the city you are in when shooting. The good news is cameras like any of the OMD EM5/10s, EPLs, Lumix GMs/GX series are available on the 2nd market mostly for good value...a fraction of what any iPhone released in the last 2 years would cost. If you don't like it you'll sell the camera for around what you bought it for maybe even a small profit. The other point is focal length. Saying 28-50mm is fine catch all range but it really depends on the environment you are in when shooting. For example I live in Metro Manila Philippines. There are lots of bridges, overpasses/underpasses that offer good vantage points/interesting light but due to the scale of some of these cities 28-50mm just wouldn't cut it unless you cropped significantly. So depending on where I'm going sometimes I'll take a 85mm, my max would be 135mm, to note at these telephoto ranges people are often in the shot to add scale to a nice scene and/or lighting.

    It's funny that you mention 'Dentists'. I sold cameras for 12 years as a part time job at the very advent ot the Digital age (2001-2013) and most of the industry refers to the advance hobbyists market (who spend FAR more money on kit than we working photographers) as 'The Dentists.' If you like a smaller camera like the X-T5 and like the rangefinder style body of the X-PRO2, I highly suggest an X-E4 if you can get your hands on one. The X-E5 (hopefully) will have the IBIS built in, but will give us all the same features that the X-E4 has (that flip LCD for instance) and a size slightly smaller than an original M body with not many more exterior dials and buttons than a traditional M. Just enough to control the exposure triangle and stay out of the say otherwise. I've an X-T3 as well, and have had 3 (and still have two) of the X-E4 bodies and they are so far, my favourite camera of all time (of hundreds that I've owned in nearly 40 years of shooting for dollars.) :) IF Fuji released an X-E5 next year with IBIS, that will make shooting with adapted vintage lenses (as well as the excellent early X mount glass that didn't have OIS built in) that much more enjoyable. I don't worry at all about Weather Resistance. The environments that I shoot in, it's mostly a marketing gimmick. I've never lost a piece of gear to the 'weather'. If I lived or photographed in actual jungles or very dusty deserts, maybe I'd feel differently, but for most other weather, I have an umbrella and/or stay out of dust storms. 😉

    Hi Criag, first time watching your videos here and glad I found you! Your tips there are excellent. But... ok background I've photographed for a long time, starting with a Zenit-E while still a young teenager. After many years of "a real job" I wanted/needed to get back into photography: a great decision but a process delayed by a massive stroke two years ago which paralysed most of my right side. Not really a problem I thought, figuring I could use a tripod ALWAYS with a remote shutter release. So, back to my "but", do you have any thoughts about your ideas - stealth etc - with camera always mounted on a tripod? Ha, perhaps it would make a great video based on the needs of (newly) disabled photographers? Perhaps one day I should set up a channel for that purpose - just not immediately! Great video.

    • @e6Vlogs
      @e6Vlogs 3 дня назад

      Hi Tony. Well, i guess you could just try the ‘fishing’ approach. Set yourself up where there is good light etc and just wait for the right person to walk into the shot. You can be looking down at your camera as if changing a setting and just take shots with a cable release. Most people won’t even notice you.

      @@e6Vlogs haha. That's what I figured, so I'm looking for a very light weight tripod with a not-so-wide footprint to help with this (my Mansotto from the late '80s is too heavy and too obvious). I suppose I'll have to try a body with good ibis at some point in case I can actually handhold some shots without trembling too much for sharp shots. Thanks a lot - consider my subscribed!

    Street Photography images can be very interesting, thought provoking, everyone loves a well taken candid photograph in an urban setting, but you can't say that using a telephoto lens to do so is creepy. If using a telephoto lens is creepy then so is using a standard lens in such a way as not to get noticed. Just because it takes more skill not to get caught doesn't change that.

    Hi Craig, great video and tips, but (you knew that was coming) I am always wary of rules and definitions in photography/art. There are two things that you said I’d like to explore, the first is lens length, every you tuber and blogger says you must use a range between 28-50mm. And I get why BUT somewhere out there is someone (not me) taking amazing street photography with a 200mm lens, most great art is about breaking the rules and conventions. Secondly is stealth Bruce Gilden would disagree, he is a great example of breaking rules. I have put on a florescent tabard, fake lanyard, and stood with a Bronica on a tripod in the middle of a busy footfall area, people seem to collectively ignore you hiding in plain sight. Just some thoughts #eschewthepretty

    Great food for thought. I shoot both APS-C and 4/3 and will often end up using 16x10 and 1x1. Definitely subject driven. I shoot a lot of birds and wildlife and will shoot to have the subject fill the vertical and use the horizontal to display context something I find lacking in wildlife/bird photography. I particularly like 1x1 for insect macro work. It really punches up the small things becoming large concept while still providing enough context to verify the in the wild feel. I'm going to step outside my box and intentionally work with other formats to shake up my thinking. Thank you.

    As others have commented, Horses for Courses. However, I've also learned along the way that shoulder bags and sling bags, while giving me quick access to my gear, put too much weight and pressure on one side; a big no-no as we age. I've now come full circle favoring the backpack style again for that reason. I use primarily zoom lenses, so there's no need to swap out lenses, and therefore no reason to frequently access my bag. The camera is always in my hand ready to shoot. Although I already have a very nice backpack (Mindshift Backlight 18L), it is geared more towards wildlife photography where I carry longer, heavier zoom lenses and lots of other camera gear. For the type of urban/travel photography that you do, I want a daypack style where the lower section holds camera gear and the top half leaves space for jacket, lunch/snacks, towel, etc. I have my sights set on the Tenba Fulton line of bags, specifically in the 10L and the 14L sizes. RUclips is currently awash in hype over another premium brand's urban backpack, but it's twice the cost, weighs twice as much (2 lbs more!), and leaves too little space for non-camera gear, which defeats the purpose.

  • @edwintam2349

    AH, yes, the constant search for the ideal camera bag! I mostly do landscape photography, with 1 camera body & 3 lenses, Lee filter set, batteries, it all adds up. I'm 70yo & have a lower back issue. I aim to limit the weight .....BUT it always limits my photographic options. I go to the Gym x 3 times a week to keep my back a strong as possible. I use an old 15yr old but trusty LOWEPRO Trekker 350 AW. Looking a replacement is so, so expensive. I am resigned to believe there is no such thing as the perfect camera bag as you pointed out. Cheers from Australia.

    I've been down the backpacks route but after needing to reduce weight, switching from Nikon to Fuji, I went for a Tenba DNA 13 messenger bag. Perfect for mirrorless and enough room for an X-T5, three lenses and additional bits and bobs, air blower, drink bottle and obligatory food items. It's weather resistant and hasn't let in rain, even when I'd forgotten to put the rain cover in. Also have an older Vanguard Havana 21, which takes the Fuji and one lens or a GR but not much else, so may need something larger than the Vanguard but smaller than the DNA to support a stripped back outing. Anyway, another great video and keen eyed photos.

    I bought one about 13 years ago and love it. It was a touch on the small side for my full frame DSLR but it suits mirrorless perfectly. I agree about the weight but I usually have heavy gear in there anyway, so for me it’s the gear that’s the issue. It’s also fantastic if you pull out the insert and use it just as a general travel bag. I got the tan and beige model and would warn against using it with wax jackets like a Barbour because it will stain the fibrenyte fabric over time

    There was a time when I considered the Billingham Hadley Series. I ended up going with the Wotencraft Trooper instead. Loved it so much I bought it in multiple sizes. Sadly, it is no longer available. That said, I almost always grab my WANDRD PRVKE. It's a pack, so it is more comfortable for me than a shoulder bag, and its side access door means I don't have to set it down to grab another lens. Not quite as fast as a shoulder bag, but it is a good compromise between comfort and speed for my own use case.
